Did you know more than 50% of physicians working in the traditional medical system struggle with burnout? And the doctor’s community is not alone, these work-life related burnouts are ruthless and rampant in almost every field.

Although talking specifically about healthcare, not only does this poorly impact the physician’s personal life including her mental and emotional wellbeing but often, it also does not lead to optimum and healthy job satisfaction. Thus, eventually causing burnout. A big reason behind these burnouts is the lack of creativity on the job or in our work environment.

Experiencing this first-hand for herself in her career as a small-town family physician Dr. Lara Salyer, our this week’s guest on Women Wired for Wellness podcast, could no longer continue to forgo. This is when she decided to strategically resign from her employed position in 2016 to open a holistic private practice in functional medicine.

Dr. Salyer believes “a patient’s health is directly proportional to their physician’s teaching ability”. Driven by a passion to impart sustainable integrative health to the masses, she leverages technology to build a cohesive tribe of wellness in her local community through innovative group medical visits, online health education, as well as traditional individual services.

Dr. Salyer has also recently released her own memoir Right Brain Rescue: One physician’s journey from burnout to bliss reveals the creative muse in all of us. This book captures her journey right from starting out as a physician in the traditional medical system and doing the grind to how she was able to liberate herself, what steps she took and what helped her in doing so.

This book inspires and shows a way for professionals on how to tap into the creative flow daily so they can re-energize their careers, decrease stress, and experience prolific joy.

On being asked as to why she lay such great importance in cultivating and harnessing creativity so much so that she assigns it as the 6th Vital Sign, Dr. Salyer was quick to jot some of the top side effects of prescribing creativity:

  • Better decision making
  • Higher resiliency
  • Increased happiness
  • Improved longevity
  • Lowered stress level
  • Stronger intuition
  • Enhanced innovative approach
